UNICO 20 87 Resort Review
This September, we headed to the Riviera Maya to experience the magic of UNICO 20°87°. UNICO is a gorgeous upscale adults-only resort that has the feel of a boutique hotel despite its size. They are a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, second runner-up as the Best Honeymoon Resort in Mexico, and have earned the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award. Needless to say, we were elated to get the opportunity to explore this property!

Atmosphere
Arriving at the resort is a wonderful sensory experience. Different scents of aromatherapy drift through every indoor space at UNICO, bringing you into a state of relaxation as soon as you step through the door. Once there, we found ourselves transported into a tropical paradise – complete with lush gardens, sparkling pools, and beautiful rooms overlooking the blue ocean beyond.
Of course, UNICO’s interior design and architecture are stunning. The rich character of Riviera Maya shines brightly throughout the resort using natural and handmade materials from the local area. The lobby is HUGE – super high ceilings and lots of places to sit, all of which were nice, comfortable, and, most importantly, clean. Everything looked well-maintained, with immaculately manicured landscaping throughout the property, giving it a fresh, serene vibe. We especially loved the numerous open-air spaces that seamlessly combined outdoor and indoor areas.
Overall we felt the atmosphere of UNICO exuded relaxation, romance, and an air of bespoke luxury. While lively activities are offered around the resort, you wouldn’t choose UNICO if you were looking for a party resort. But for couples looking for beachside bliss and top-of-the-line cuisine, this five-star adults-only resort is the perfect romantic retreat.

Accommodations
The rooms at UNICO are beautiful. They feature a mix of modern and traditional elements, with wood and stone accents, lots of light from the sliding glass doors that expand the full width of the room, and high ceilings. The beds were extremely comfortable, with high-quality linens that made it easy to fall asleep each night after being out all day exploring and enjoying the resort.
As a self-proclaimed bathroom snob, we found the bathroom to be spacious but not huge. The shower was incredible, with a rain head, handheld wand, two jets, and a stone shower bench. Plus, the bathrobes are made of sweatshirt material and are to die for. You can even buy one with complimentary personalized embroidery to take home with you!
UNICO offers a variety of suite options, all of which make excellent choices for your next vacation. Of course, we’ve all seen those incredible swim-up suites, but you shouldn’t overlook the spacious ocean-view suites, which feature a hydro spa tub on the balcony. Overall, you can’t go wrong with any of the accommodations at this resort.
Service
We were blown away by the level of service and attention to detail at UNICO. From the moment we arrived, our local host (basically your own personal concierge) made us feel like we were their top priority. My host reached out to me every morning to see if I needed anything, arranged dinner reservations, and even got the main bar to play the current NFL Football game. The staff was extremely accommodating and made sure we felt like VIPs. The service continued throughout the week, from the servers to the bartenders at the poolside bar.

Not only does UNICO provide an outstanding guest experience, but they also work with the local community to create enriching cultural connections for all who visit. One such example is the complimentary hats provided to guests that an onsite artist can customize. In addition, UNICO offers a variety of activities for guests who want to get outside and explore the area. From snorkeling excursions in nearby cenotes to hiking on one of several trails through the jungle or forests, there’s plenty to do while you’re staying here.
For those looking to relax and unwind, UNICO has several pools that cater to your current mood. Hang out by the swim-up bar with a drink in hand, listen to the latest hits, or chill out at the hydrotherapy area in the luxury spa. They also offer a full-service beauty salon where you can get a manicure or pedicure before heading out for an afternoon of indulgence. Enjoy breakfast in bed with UNICOs 24/7 room service. Or, head out to one of the many restaurants where you can enjoy a lavish meal.
Food & Drink
If you know us, then you know that we are foodies. We have a discriminating palate, so food is one area we struggle to find what we consider GREAT food. With that being said, we did enjoy the food at UNICO. With five restaurants, 24/7 room service, and a curated selection of delicious plant-based and vegan dishes, UNICO offers a wide variety of cuisine to enjoy in paradise. From elevated fine dining to casual beachside buffets, the restaurants at this adults-only retreat provide a diverse mix of international flavors.
Our favorite meal was at Mura House, which is the Japanese Restaurant at the resort. We found the best food here was the made-to-order menu options, rather than the hibachi. The Edamame had the perfect amount of salt and seasoning and is definitely worth ordering every time. We find that the Yakitori is one of those items that are often overcooked, but not at Mura house. The Chicken Yakitori was cooked to perfection, still moist and tender, with the flavor of the grill present in every piece. We also had the Beef and Lamb Yakitori, which were both delicious.
UNICO also offers a plethora of drinks, domestic liquors and tequila, as well as international liquors that most of us are familiar with. If you don’t know what you want to drink, each bar has its own bar menu with options to select from. We found this to be a double-edged sword, as you might discover one drink you enjoy only to find another bar at the resort didn’t offer it.
Destination Weddings At UNICO
UNICO is the perfect resort if you are looking to have an intimate adults-only destination wedding. Our two favorite locations are private and secluded, which brides often ask for. The Wedding Gazebo is located on the east wing of the resort and is perfect if you want the Caribbean Sea as your backdrop. Then on the opposite side of the beach is the Terraza Verde, which is surrounded by nature and is the perfect spot to decorate and make your own. With a variety of bespoke options to craft your perfect wedding day, we think UNICO is an ideal venue for a one-of-a-kind destination wedding.

Our Final Thoughts on UNICO
We have been to many luxury resorts over the years, and UNICO is definitely one of our favorites. This all-inclusive property offers everything you need for a worry-free getaway, with beautiful accommodations and top-notch service. Overall, we highly recommend this luxury resort for a couple’s getaway or a relaxing retreat.
